Sri Lanka Elephant Haven

From $1,150 | Best travel period: August – October | Group, couple, or solo | Duration: 6 days
Location: Minneriya & Kaudulla National Parks, Sri Lanka

Experience the serene beauty of Sri Lanka's dry zone forests on this 6-day journey focused on the ethical observation of wild Asian elephants.

Centered around the Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks—home to one of Asia’s most spectacular elephant gatherings—this tour offers a respectful, conservation-focused alternative to traditional wildlife tourism. You’ll explore national parks with experienced naturalists, visit an ethical elephant sanctuary, and engage with local communities working to protect these gentle giants.

About the Location

The tour takes place in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, a region of forested plains, ancient reservoirs, and protected wildlife zones. The two key national parks, Minneriya and Kaudulla, are connected by seasonal elephant corridors, allowing free movement between water sources and forest feeding grounds.

Minneriya is especially known for "The Gathering", a natural phenomenon where up to 300 wild elephants congregate during the dry season (typically from August to October) around the park’s central reservoir. It is considered one of the largest seasonal gatherings of Asian elephants in the world.

Kaudulla, located just north of Minneriya, offers a similar environment with fewer visitors, making it an ideal location for quieter observation and photography. Both parks are part of a broader wildlife corridor that includes Wasgamuwa and Somawathiya National Parks, all vital to the survival of Sri Lanka’s remaining elephant population.
